For my landscape and western art, I prefer to work in oil and alkyd on canvas. It allows me to blend my colors and provides texture to certain elements of my compositions, like trees, rocks and mountains. While living in El Guique, New Mexico in the mid- 90's, I studied the works of some of the best contemporary American southwest and western artists around Santa Fe and talked with them about their compositions, techniques and philosophies. I continually experiment with different painting styles, but prefer the traditional style of western artists like Charlie Russell. I build my wildlife sketches by cutting them into scratchboard and adding colored ink for highlight. This is a very interesting medium to work in and produces eye-catching images, but it is extremely unforgiving. I love the way scratchboard provides rich contrast, allowing for detail in the eyes and fur of wildlife. Thank you for visiting Virtual Studio! I hope you find my work interesting. |
